Baskets and Jar Stolen from Snowmass, Colorado Home November, 2005

In November, 2005, nine Pima Baskets and a Cochita Pueblo Jar were reported stolen from a Snowmass, Colorado home, The police report number is 05S378 and the contact is Officer Clay Owen at the Snowmass Police Department – Telephone #970-923-5330 ext. 204. Native wool and dye, 48″ x 35″, warp: 10/inch weft: 36/inch, Child’s serape or double-saddle blanket. Red background with series of 5 rows of diamond-edged diamonds in white and pale green, enclosing a white or green zigzag or cross. Little blue in zigzags at one end. Selvage cord, corner tassels. Native wool, 50″ x 31″, warp: 12/inch weft: 48/inch white background almost covered with stripes of red and blue and pale tan. in center, wide area of red with terraced diamond zigzag lines in blue and blue crosses in center. At ends, diamond motifs in red, white and tan. Intermediate zigzag lines of red and blue. White and blue are native wool. Reworked edges. Red, two shades of tan are non-native, two-ply wool. Stolen Navajo Child’s/Saddle Blanket 19th Century

Native wool 52″ x 35″ warp: 11/inch weft: 42/inch Navaho double saddle blanket, terrace style. Ground natural grey with narrow bands of red and light green and blue stripes. At ends, narrow bands of terrace motifs in blue and green on orange ground. in center, red band with blue terrace diamond motifs. Red is non-native and in places, mixed with white native. Stolen Navajo Saddle Blanket, 19th Century

Native wool 45″ x 28″, warp: 9/inch weft: 42/inch, background creamy white with bands of red and blue stripes. Number of shades of red ranging from purple to soft rose. Little pale green in end bands, in a beaded stripe. Reds are all non-native wools and pale green in non-native also. Selvage cord, edges have been sewed with silk thread. Native wool, 63″ x 44″, warp: 8/inch weft: 46/inch, blue and black narrow striped background with intervals of red bayeta, white and blue diamond stripes. Center oblique-angled diamond with red center, blue, white and red border. Lightning-shaped zigzags and smaller diamond in center of diamond motif. Bayeta soft rose. Native wool 80″ x 50″ warp: 8/inch weft: 32/inch red background with large oblique angle-shaped diamonds across center. in the end areas, a series of large enclosing terrace motifs, the center of which is a white cross. Design in black, white and pale green throughout. Native wool, selvage cord, lazy lines visible. Stolen Saltillo Serape, Early 19th Century

Mexican wool and cotton, 92″ x 51″, warp: 19/inch – cotton weft: 74/inch – wool. Made in two pieces. Head opening in center has been sewed up and the rest of center seam crocheted together. Center lozenge of deep, rich brown with inner lozenges of dark blue, light blue and white. a sprinkling of white dots. Narrow border of dark brown sprinkled with white dots. General field is white with brown and blue dots. Linen warp. Tapestry weave, soft and not too tight. Stolen Tularosa Olla, Historic Mata Ortiz Effigy Jar, Chinese Han Dynasty Statues and Tang Dynasty Horse

In September, 2005, a Canon City, Colorado home was broken into and a lifetime collection of artifacts were stolen. Removed were 8 Navajo weaves, these were not my forte as my interest is mainly in ancient ceramics and flint items, however I know these weaves are all old and were worth a lot to me. the following was also taken- 1- Estruscan effigy pot, about 14 ancient asian pieces, 1- spanish colonial plate from Florida, 6- south american pre-columbian pieces, 14- south western prehistoric pieces, 33 riker mounts of the very best of my projectile points and blades and approximately 12 various early tramp art frames and art. On July 4, 2005 a Fred Peshlikai square stone Blue Gem Navajo bracelet, eight pairs of earrings, four valuable old rings and several other pieces were stolen from a home in Santa Fe. Stolen Navajo Teec Nos Pos Rug, Stolen Navajo Bow and Quiver and Stolen Navajo Dress

On or about June 30, 2005, a white 2003 Ford Econoline Van with NM Plate # 896NDC, VIN # 1FTSE34LX3HC06609 with two doors up front and two cargo doors in the rear, no rear panel or side panel windows, with tinted glass (a small fixed-pane window immediately behind the driver’s door window was recently replace and was not as darkly tinted as the others) was stolen from a Gallup Indian Trader’s home. a large amount of American Indian Art and Jewelry was in the van when it was stolen. Three of the larger, more valuable items are pictured above: 1)a circa 1930 Teec Nos Pos rug, approximately 9.5′ x 6.5′, a Navajo (Manuelito) Mountain Lion Hide Bow Case and Quiver with bow, circa 1880 and a Navajo two-part dress (looks like two blankets loosely sewn together at the top) in cochineal-dyed and brown wool, ca. 1850-1870. STOLEN - American Indian Art Collection - Jackson Hole, WY

American Indian Items Stolen from Jackson Hole, WY Home, Spring, 2005

A Jackson Hole, WY home experienced a theft in Spring, 2005. The stolen items include a Hopi Kachina, a Klagetoh rug, a Red Mesa rug, a Sioux roach, a pair of leather pants said to have been worn by Chief Sitting Bull, a pipe bag said to have been used by Chief Sitting Bull and two Socorro Ollas. It is possible that a prominent Santa Fe trader, not an ATADA member, sold some of these items just before he passed away. The FBI Washington Field Office and Richmond Division are investigating the theft of several hundred artifacts taken during a nighttime burglary of the Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum, located in Bland, Virginia. The burglary happened on May 30, 2005. We became aware of the burglary in June 2006 and offered our assistance to the Bland County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office.

STOLEN - Native American Pottery - Cortez, CO

Theft at Cortez, CO Gallery, April 13, 2005

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary that occurred on or around April 13, 2005 at Mesa Indian Trading Company and Gallery, just outside Cortez, Colorado, where unknown persons stole approximately $121,000. in irreplaceable Santa Clara pots and plates, some dating back to the 1920s. There was also damage done to the property to gain access to the gallery.

Below are photos of three of seventeen items taken during an early morning burglary on January 11, 2005, of the cultural museum at the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians located in Indio, California. The seventeen artifacts are valued at more than $100,000 and were comprised of personally loaned items as well as items loaned from the State of California. STOLEN - Tribal Art - San Clemente, CA

Stolen Egyptian Talisman, ca. 3rd Century B. C.

The theft of my briefcase occurred on the property (garage) of my residence in San Clemente, ca. and was taken from inside my automobile while I was unloading many bags and boxes of art objects and suitcases and carrying them into my house. It occurred between 8:30 and 9:30 PM on 12/21/04. There were four objects inside my briefcase listed below:

  • 1) An Egyptian black stone ‘Cippus of Horus’, a talisman depicting Horus standing on crocodiles holding small animals in each hand, the reverse side depicting multiple lines of hieroglyphics, ca. 3rd Century B.C. Height 3.25 in., shown in image above.
  • 2) A Northwest Coast Indian marine ivory (whale’s tooth) shaman’s amulet, Haida Tribe, ca. 19th Century. Length: 3.75 in.
  • 3) A Northwest Coast Indian amuletic pendant depicting an eagle head, ca. 19th Century. Length: 3 in.
  • 4) A Pre-Columbian Mixtec miniature stone skull, with eyes inlaid with turquoise, Mexico, A.D. 12th to 14th Century. Height: approx. 1.5 in.

Stolen Teec Nos Pos Rug

We unfortunately must report a theft from Price-Dewey Galleries, 53 Old Santa Fe Trail, 2nd Floor, Santa Fe, 87505. This incident has been reported to the authorities. We believe the following textile was stolen during business hours, during the day, Wednesday, October 20th, 2004. The textile was located in a shared public space in a stairwell/hallway.
